Marquisat de Sainte-Marie

In November 1493, Christopher Colombus first set ashore Guadeloupe at the place which became the commune of Sainte-Marie. Initially called KARUKERA by the Caribbean Indians, Guadeloupe saw the foundation of the Domain of Marquisat of Sainte Marie in 1895. It is in the middle of this Domain that the oldest distiller of the island, Espérance produces an exceptional rum: rhum KARUKERA.

Today more than ever, Karukera exhibits an indisputable quality. Completely autonomous, the Domain of Marquisat de Sainte-Marie integrates single distilling where all the chain of development and aging of rum is managed on its grounds.  They are very selective in nature, using only one variety of sugarcane.  The Domain ensures it controls all the qualitative controls of a prémium quality regularity at each stage of the development. This is confirmed by impartial reports of indpendent experts.

Guadeloupe and Martinique became French colonies in 1674, and the cradle of the commerce of sugar aged exceptionally for the French royalty.  The production of rum became the principal production of the two islands, who became first world producers at the end of the 19th century.

It was noted that rum made exclusively from the fermentation of the juice of sugar cane was a more qualitative, powerful rum that possessed an exceptional aromatic richness than that of a typical molasses rum.  Only three percent of the worldwide rum production is made with pure sugar cane.
